Latvias Banks

The 2018 year started with shocks in the Latvian bank sector. ABLV BANK, which is the fourth largest bank in Latvia based on assets (EUR 3700 million), made a decision of voluntary liquidation following the report of FinCEN (US).

Legislative amendments take effect on 01.05.2018 that prohibit the Latvian banks to provide services to shell companies. The banks have two options to choose from:  stop operations with shell companies or leave the market.

According to the Latvian Ministry of Finance, such “cleaning” from shell companies will allow Latvia to keep a good reputation rating despite the fact that Latvia’s reputation as a financial bridge between the east and west will be questionable.

Below is general information about the banking system in Latvia. As of 1 March 2018, over 15 commercial banks operate in Latvia. Scandinavian banks are market leaders.

Supervision and control of banks are performed by: Bank of Latvia; Financial and Capital Market Commission; The Office for Prevention of Laundering of Proceeds Derived from Criminal Activity.
